Many of you have expressed the desire to choose your own books and to increase the amount you read, so we will be choosing our personal reading books for the semester.
Today, you heard a book talk from Ms. Luhtala about a variety of books to choose from, and hopefully, you've decided on one. You should bring this book with you to class, as we will have built in reading time. You will have a book trailer project at the end, so be sure you're staying up to date with the reading.
Tonight's Homework: Post a brief paragraph of why you chose this book.
I chose to read the book Beauty Queens by Libba Bray. This book caught my eye because the cover was much different than the others. I also heard the description about this book and it sounded very interesting and different than any of the other books that were mentioned.
ReplyDeleteThis books is about how a plane crashes with a lot of girls on it for a beauty pageant. They must survive, and adapt to the new things they must do. They are used to having everything done for them, and living in a modern society. Now they must overcome the struggles of surviving on an island, and having to use different gender roles to help each other.
I chose the book "Will Grayson Will Grayson" by John Green and David Levithan for the personal reading assignment. This book stood out to me due to the fact that it was written by John Green. Last year, my sister Fiona recommended the book "Looking For Alaska", also written by Green. I took up her recommendation and found myself loving the novel because it was full of unexpected surprises and was also very relatable. I fell in love with the characters from the beginning because they were unique, funny, and I enjoyed learning more and more about them. Because I loved this book, I decided to also try "The fault in Our Stars", another novel that Green is known for. Like "Looking for Alaska", I fell in love with the book and Augustus Waters. I envied their relationship and was moved by the ending. After reading these books, I fell in love with John Green and wanted to experience more of his work.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I saw a new John Green book on the stands, I knew I had to pick it up. I hope this novel is as moving, relatable, and unique as the two others. Knowing Green from the past books, I expect to jump into the book quickly and experience episodes of non-stop page turning.
I chose the book No Easy Day because I'm interested in the story along with the background information. I followed along with the Osama Bin Laden story and looked up details to try and find a first person perspective. What this book offers is a first person perspective into the plan and actual murder of Osama. I am really interested in learning the mechanics and specificity of the plan.
ReplyDeleteNot only was I solely interested in this, but my brother and parents both recommended it to me. At first, I only looked up information on the internet, but now that I have a book, I will be able to go more in depth. Although I know what happens in the end already, I want to know how the murder happens because it's about the journey not the destination.
I choose to read the book "Looking for Alaska" by John Green. Ever since I heard of John Green, I've received many recommendations regarding reading the book. Many said that if I enjoyed the book "The Fault in Our Stars", then I would enjoy LFA. I was also drawn to the book because of its mysterious cover. I already love the fact that the book is masked with mystery by using a blown out candle to draw you in. I can't begin to express my excitement for this book along with the hope that my love with flourish for it like it did with the book "The Fault in Our Stars".
ReplyDeleteI chose the novel "Atonement" by Ivan McEwan. I chose this book because I have heard that the book, as well as the movie, are very good. The cover intrigued me because it is a black and white picture of a water fountain outside of a house, which I found interesting because it is not the standard flashy or colorful book cover that one might expect.
ReplyDeleteAfter researching atonement on the internet, I found that the word has to do with both the Christian and Jewish faiths, so I expect those religions to be prominent on the book. Additionally, the book is set in 1935 which is during the middle of World War 2 so I think that the war will play a large role while I read the book.
I chose the novel "Divergent" by Veronica Roth. I chose this book because I have heard that the book is very similar to "Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. The cover picture makes me think a bit because of all the buildings in what looks like Chicago and the water and plants in contrast to the city. So this looked pretty interesting because of the contrast. Along with the fire circle with a ball in the middle.
ReplyDeleteAfter researching it a little on the internet I found that it is going to be made into a movie, so that made me a little more interested. Also I read about Beatrice and am anxious to find out the character development along with her brother Caleb. I am also very interested in fiction and almost only like that genre. I am excited to see what happens in the book.
I chose the book "Catching Fire" by Suzanne Collins. I chose this novel because I read its prequel, "The Hunger Games" and I really enjoyed it. The cover of this book takes more of a minimalist approach, the main thing that catches my eye is the bird in the middle. The rest of the cover is red with a circular design.
ReplyDeleteA topic that really interests me in movies/books is a futuristic theme as well as action and adventure which the first book had a lot of, so I am definitely excited to be reading this one. I also am reading this book because the movie is coming out soon, and I would like to read the book before seeing the movie.
I chose the book "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. I choose it because the cover first caught my eye because I had seen it on a shelf in my house. I also discussed with Ms. Weeks if it was a good book and she highly recommended it.
ReplyDeleteIt is about a boy with asperger syndrome who embarks on a mystery to find a missing black dog. This intrigued me because it was a condition I wasn't previously familiar with. The book is a mystery which is a genre I haven't read very much in so I am excited to see if I like it.
I chose the book "A Million Little Pieces by James Frey. The book is about someone who goes to rehab for drinking and doing drugs, and I chose it because it sounds similar to another book I read recently called Its Kind of a Funny Story about someone who goes into a mental ward which I really enjoyed. I'm hoping this book will turn out to be like the one I read, so that I end up liking it.
ReplyDeleteAnother reason why I chose this book is because it is linked to a controversy; it was released as a memoir but then was deemed semi-fictional because of some exaggerations and fictional additions that the author added. Following this controversy, the book has received some very positive, but also some very negative, reviews; there hasn't been much in the middle. After reading through these conflicting reviews, I am curious to see what my own opinion on the book is and I look forward to reading it.
I chose to read the book "Divergent" by Veronica Roth. One of the main reasons I chose this book is because it is fiction, and I don't like too many other genres outside of that. Also, I heard that this book was similar to Suzanne Collin's "The Hunger Games" series, which I enjoyed reading.
ReplyDeleteThe cover of this book also interested me. One reason why is because it has a city that looks modern, just like the ones we have today, yet it has what looks like miles and miles of swamp lands surrounding it, so I am curious to see what happened to cause this. Also, the city doesn't look any different from the cities we see today, but it sounds like it is a lot different on the inside, so I would like to find out the contrasts between our society and theirs.
I chose the book "No Easy Day" by Mark Owen because of the the elaborate topic that it pertains to. This story is about how the mission to kill Osama Bin Laden was planned and executed by the U.S Navy Seals. Now I have heard lots about this mission on the news and in the papers but I believe that hearing a first hand account would be especially exciting and it would open up the door to a whole new world of details and specifications that lead to this mission.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I chose this story because of the interesting and majestic cover of the book. The cover portrays a Navy Seal all suited up and ready to step into the line of battle at a moments notice. Furthermore, I chose this story because it was recommended to me by a friend and my dad has read it and I distinctly recall his praise as it pertains to the story.
I chose the book "Atonement" by Ian McEwan for two reasons. The first is that the cover of the book exhibits a photograph of what looks like a stone mansion which drew me in because not only do books seem to be more entertaining when the characters live in a gorgeously luxurious environment such as this but I have visited the Newport Mansions several times in the past couple of years and find them breathtaking and full of so much equally breathtaking history. This also drew me in because it reminds me somewhat of a mansion I visited this summer in Long Island that Tom and Daisy's mansion for the 2013 movie version of The Great Gatsby is based off of. The other reason that I chose this book is that the summary on the inside cover says it takes place in 1935, just before World War II and I love the entire first half of the twentieth century in terms of literature because it tends to be more striking and romantic than any realistic fiction that is written about today.
ReplyDeleteI chose to read "The Lone Survivor" by Marcus Luttrell. I have chosen this book because it sparked my interest in the military. I have enjoyed reading other military books like "Basher Five-Two", which is why I can't wait to start another book like it. IT was also recommended to me by my dad and my brother, and is considered to be in their all time favorite books. I have previously read books recommended by them and have loved them, so I can't wait to get into another great book. Also, since they have already read this book I can talk about what it is going on in the book and talk to them about questions that come up. This will help me understand the book a lot better and make it a much more enjoyable experience.
ReplyDeleteI chose this book for multiple reasons. The main reason I chose to read this book is because I read The Hunger Games and I wanted to continue the story line. Another reason I am reading this book is because it was recommended by many of my friends who have read all three books in the hunger games series. There is one final important reason I am reading Catching Fire is that the movie is coming out soon and I usually try to read books before I see the movies.
ReplyDeleteThis book is about the two victors of the last hunger games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, competing once again in a different version of the hunger games that happens every 25 hunger games; all of the previous victors in the past 25 years compete against each other in the games.
What's the title?
DeleteThe book I chose for my personal reading book was "Two Minute Drill" by Mike Lupica. This book really caught my eye because I love all of Mike Lupica's books and I know him personally. He is a great author who has wrote many great sports books such as Heat and Travel Team; two of my favorite books. He's an author that takes sports to a whole other level and his knowledge about sports really shows in these books. That's what makes Mike Lupica a great author. I also chose this book because I have a passion for the game of football. I enjoy the game and lobe to read about it. I think of football differently than many others like Mike Lupica does so I want to read a book of his when I see it. As I read this book I will learn about another Mike Lupica story and will make connections to the book. By looking at the cover of "Two Minute Drill" by Mike Lupica, I get excited and want to dig in and enjoy this great book.
ReplyDeleteThe reason I chose the book Tim Tebow Through My Eyes is for my semester free reading project is because I am interested to see what Tim went through as a kid. Most NFL players have a background that is inspiring, I would like to see how inspiring or interesting his background is. Another reason I would like to read this book is because Tim plays football and football is a sport I am very familiar with so I can relate to or compare anything that is going on in the book. From what I understand this book is about where Tim Tebow came from and what he has done to get himself into the best league of football there is. Tim has to work hard and be determined if he wants to get there. If he does not work as hard as he can he can find himself along with many others on the practice squad or a back player. I can not wait to read this book, i have wanted to read ever since I had seen Tim play in college.
ReplyDeleteI chose the book, "The Realm of Possibility" by David Levithan for my semester free reading project is because I realized that the whole book was a poem. As I had said in my personal narrative connection piece, I love writing poetry. I was intrigued by the fact that a full story could be told with chapters that look like individual poems. In addition, when I read the back cover of the book, it says that it is recommended for teenagers which made me think I would be able to connect to it which could make me find it more interesting. Finally, in the summary of the book, it says that the main character, a girl, is in love with Holden Caulfield who it the main character in Catcher in the Rye. This might help me understand the book in the future because this story might have some information and key points. I found this book unique and interesting so I decided to go for it, especially since it is something totally different from what I have read in the past.
ReplyDeleteI choose to read the book, Catching Fire this is the second edition of The Hunger Games. I choose this book because it was recommended by many others who have read the hunger games series. Also, i decided to continue on the hunger games series because i really liked the book and the movie. Next, the movie for this book is supposed to come out this year and its always good to read the book before the movie. The book always has way more description and missing many parts. The first book had very much action and adventuring through the woods worrying what is gonna happen next. I gets very intense so you just want to read on. I am hoping for another great book just like first book.
ReplyDeleteI have chosen to read the book Catching Fire. This is the second book in the Hunger Games series. I chose this book because it got good reviews and i have wanted to continue the series but never found the time until now. I loved the first book and movie and hopefully the second one will be just as good
ReplyDeleteI chose the book “Open” an autobiography on Andre Agassi. I chose this book for two reasons. The first being that tennis is one of my favorite sports and a great passion of mine. The second is that when I was a young boy my grandparents used to own a ranch in Idaho. I used to go to Idaho in the summer because there was a lake nearby and we can waterski and I would also go on the winter because there is ski resort really close. One day when I was about nine while sitting at the bar in a restaurant at the ski resort a man sat down next to me immediately I knew this man was Andre Agassi. I knew this because my cousin was a big tennis player and tennis fan and I used to watch Andre Agassi play with my cousin, and I once saw him play at the US Open when I was really young. By now Agassi was retired but this moment still stood out to me in my mind because he won eight grand slams and is a huge legend and inspiration in my mind.
ReplyDeleteI chose the book "Big Red" by Jim Kjelgaard, which is about a man named Danny and a dog named Red who grow to love each other and have many different adventures with one another. I chose this book because I really like my own dog and the back of this book tells how much Danny and the dog grow to like one another and I can relate to that. Also it looked like a fun book to read that I can relate to, which is not like many books I have read in school.
ReplyDeleteI chose the book "Million Dollar Throw" by Mike Lupica. I have chosen this book because I have read other books that Mike Lupica wrote. I read the book "Million Dollar Shot" which was also by Mike Lupica. I could really relate to the book because I could put myself in the position the main character was groing through. He had one shot to win one million dollars. I could relate to how he felt because I would of felt the same thing he felt. That is one of the main reasons I chose the book because I felt like I could really connect to what the main character is going through. I wanted to see if all of Mike Lucipa's books were like that. That's why I chose the "Million Dollar Throw" to see if all of Mike Lucipa's books are exciting as his other book that I read.
ReplyDeleteSadly Big Read did not turn out. So I now have chose The Blindside. I picked this because I am a big football fan and know who the main character is a football player. I have never seen the full movie but I have seen parts and it looks very interesting, which means the book most be very good. I also want to know what his story is and all the details about it because I have heard that it is very cool how he became famous and a football star.
